Summer in Australia has a pretty simple formula: a backyard, a BBQ, a few mates and some good banter. Now, Brookvale Union is adding one more thing to the mix, a brand-new backyard game designed to keep the nonsense flowing all summer long.

Introducing ‘Hands-Free Tennis’, a gloriously ridiculous backyard sport inspired by classic totem tennis. The game features a central pole with a ball attached by a cord, paired with a normal racquet strapped around the waist by any means necessary, leaving both hands completely free to use for other activities, like manning the BBQ or flipping the tennis on the TV. The skill is all in the hips, powerful thrusts and pumps are key in crushing your component.

To launch the ‘Hands-Free Tennis’ campaign, Brookvale Union has teamed up with Australian tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis, who is backing the game as the next great Aussie summer pastime and encouraging the nation to make it official.

“This is exactly the kind of nonsense Aussies are good at,” says Kokkinakis. “We love a good backyard sport and I’ve loved getting amongst it to help bring it to the fans this Summer.”

Kokkinakis has been fully focused on the doubles draw for the Australian Open, but has enjoyed participating in the Hands-Free Tennis campaign to keep his competitive spirit going after his formal tennis training, while also having a bit of nonsensical fun.

“This is what Brookvale Union is all about,” says Cameron Foster, Marketing and Commercial Lead, Brookvale Union. “Quality nonsense, done properly. We’re not here to overcomplicate summer. We’re here to make it better, funnier, and best enjoyed with mates.”

Alongside his doubles matches at the Australian Open, Hands-Free Tennis will debut in Melbourne Park where Thanasi Kokkinankis will launch the new Summer sport, encouraging Aussies to grab a racquet, strap it around them and give it a go in their own backyard.
